Academy of Model Aeronautics Convention Takes Flight in Ontario

ONTARIO, Calif., Jan. 4, 2005 – Known as the world's largest sport aviation organization, the Academy of Model Aeronautics returns to Ontario for its annual convention on Friday, January 7 through Sunday, January 9. The AMA convention exhibits model aircrafts in addition to boats, cars, trains, rockets, radio control systems and related hobby products.

"Over the past year, we've seen a dramatic increase in attention for model and collector shows," stated Amita Patel, OCVB's director of sales and marketing. "This convention in particular has done so well in the past that we expect more than 9,000 in attendance this upcoming weekend." Patel estimates the event to provide an economic impact of $296,860 for Ontario.

Free workshops will be offered throughout the AMA Convention discussing the advantages of brushless motors, care and use of rechargeable batteries, latest technology with lithium-polymer, "Show and Tell" presentations and more.

The AMA convention will also host a "Swap Shop" for those interested in buying, selling or trading model replicas. The cost of the "Swap Shop" is free with admission.

A model contest will be held on Sunday, featuring model aircrafts, helicopters, cars and boats. The "Static Model Competition" is open to all ages and is free to enter. Contestants must also be the builder of the model. Entries must be taken to the loading dock entrance of the Ontario Convention Center on Thursday, 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. or Friday, 10 a.m. – 7 p.m. If entries are brought during show hours on Friday, contestants must bring entries through the main show entrance and pay admission.

The conference begins Friday and runs through Sunday at the Ontario Convention Center, located at 2000 Convention Center Way in Ontario. Exhibit hours are: Friday noon – 6 p.m.; Saturday 10 a.m. – 6 p.m.; and Sunday 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. General admission is $10 per day, or $8 for current AMA members.
